Root Canals
About Root Canals
Root canal therapy is the only option to remove significant infection to the root of a tooth and to relieve pain, yet keep the natural tooth. The root canal is the pathway for the nerve to supply sensation through the root. The nerve is surrounded by tissue called pulp, a protective layer. Sometimes, decay progresses to the point where the center of the tooth becomes infected, resulting in diseased or deadened pulp. When pulp becomes diseased, significant pain may develop. In some cases, we can detect issues in the root canal through x-rays, before intense pain begins.
Therapy consists of the removal of infected pulp, as well as the nerve of a damaged tooth. Once all tissue in the canal has been removed, the area is thoroughly cleaned and is then sealed. After root canal therapy, the affected tooth will be fully restored with a dental crown. We understand that some patients feel quite anxious about undergoing root canal therapy, and perform this treatment with the utmost precision and gentle technique.
